Police Corruption and the Katrina Shootings

Last updated 11 months ago

This 2011 news report discusses police havoc in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Six officers were convicted for shooting and killing unarmed civilians several days after the hurricane. The police claimed that they were responding to a report of gun violence, and fired upon the civilians without stopping to ask questions.

Following the shootout, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officers falsified reports and planted a gun at the scene. This incident, and its’ failed cover-up, became a symbol of police abuse and corruption in New Orleans.

It doesn’t take a hurricane for police brutality and corruption to rear its head.
